A Quilting Journey

Accessories Can Be Necessities

Happy Wednesday!

Hubby plays softball on Tuesday and Friday’s in a league for seniors while I work. Yesterday he called to let me know he and another player were injured during the game and on their way to the hospital. Injuries were minor but wanted to be on the safe side.

Later he texted me asking if we had a heating pad, the doctor suggested he alternate using a heating pad and ice pack for his groin injury.

I found our heating pad. I’m sure I purchased the heating pad 20 years ago! The cover was a bit raggedy and unattractive to say the least. I wanted to spruce it up before he got home ? Any excuse to sew works for me!

After measuring the original cover I created a quick sketch to make a replacement. Below is what I came up with. Final Size 12.5 x 15 inches.

Heating Pad Front

Heating Pad Back

  • Using seven (7) 2.5 inch x WOF I created a strip set
  • Cut the strip set in half – approximately 21 inches
  • I cut one of the half pieces into 2.5 inch segments
  • Sew the 2.5 inch segments back together alternating ends to create the patchwork
  • Once I reached my desired size – I stitched the patchwork piece to the remaining half strip set along the sides
  • Created a lining (same size as previous step) using flannel then inserted into the patchwork piece
  • Created a half inch facing around the top
  • Added a snap
  • Voila – finished – 30 minutes at best
  • I took the scraps and made a cord cover.

I have a small craft table in my sewing room and I struggle with keeping the tools I use frequently organized and handy. A few years ago I made makeup brush organizers that roll up and tie with ribbon as gifts for my daughters friends and thought something in that format would work for me.

I’m happy with how this turned out as well.

Did you notice the butter knife? It’s my point turner!

Granted neither one of these two projects are original but it was terrific just creating the pattern myself and bringing them to life ?

What accessories have you created that become necessities?

Happy Sewing and Quilting!
