My Sewful Retirement

A Quilting Journey

Happy Pineapple Day

Happy Thursday!

It’s been a long time since I posted something to my journal. We’ve spent the past couple of months traveling…spending time with family and friends. It was a lot of fun but I’m happy to be home sleeping in my own bed again 🙂

Our club members decided to make table runners using the pineapple quilt blocks for June. I was super happy with this choice, the pineapple block is one I’ve never made before and I was gifted the Creative Grids pineapple trim tool a few years ago and finally had an opportunity to use it.

I used Missouri Star Quilt Company Pineapple Table Runner pattern from the early winter 2017 edition of their Block magazine along with Jenny’s video tutorial using the trim tool to make my runner. You can watch the video here. The trim tool is fantastic —

I used Kona solids and Zen Chic modern background paper for the pineapple blocks. The border is a Kaufman digital floral print. All scraps from my stash- YAY !! Table runner measures 16 x 36 inches.

Our club focuses primarily on projects using machine embroidery. I designed a machine appliqued pineapple design for the group. I made two placemats measuring 12 x 16 inches to showcase the design.

The body of the pineapple is a friendship braid – also made with my embroidery machine. I included quilting lines for the pineapple body and leaf top. I used a zig zag stitch for the applique finish. I’m really pleased with the design and can’t wait to see how the other ladies use their pineapple design!

Happy Sewing & Quilting!

  2. These pineapple placemats are really charming, Karla–clever idea! I also like your table runner with the pineapple blocks. I did a similar quilt a couple of years ago and it is still a favorite. Pineapple blocks seem to appeal to all of us, and am glad you now have one to grace your table.

    • Thanks for your lovely comment regarding the placemats. I’m really enjoying learning to create my own embroidery designs. After making the runner I did a search on Pinterest — OMG so many amazing pineapple quilts — I will definitely be making something else!

  4. Hi Karla! I’m glad you’re back home now – I missed your sewing updates and just your posts in general. I just LOVE those placemats. The colors and fabrics are so fun and the design looks realistic with some summery fun. I have seen several friends making pineapple blocks lately, and I’m getting sucked in. It will have to go on my to-do project list soon. ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. Welcome home! I know you had great adventures! Your runner looks fabulous with that border, and your own pineapple design is so cute! What I like is that I could do it without an embroidery machine. =) Thanks for the inspiration.
